Project Overview

1Eighty was engaged to provide advanced cladding solutions for the refurbishment of the High Performance Centre at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The centre is a pivotal facility within the stadium complex, offering state-ofthe- art training amenities for athletes, including a 10-lane 110-metre track, high-jump bed, long jump and triple jump areas, and an indoor throwing cage. It also serves as a centre for sports education in collaboration with Birmingham City University, enhancing opportunities for students and the local community. The project demanded cladding solutions that would complement the modern architectural design of the facility while ensuring durability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance.

Our Role

1Eighty were engaged during the design development stage in order to advise on the most appropriate specifications for the project. This involved selecting state-of-the-art materials to achieve both aesthetic excellence and functional performance, ensuring the building harmonized with the overall aesthetic of Alexander Stadium and its stringent performance standards. Following design development we were tasked with the design and installation of the high-quality cladding systems for the two external elevations.

Our Works

The cladding materials selected for the project can be summarised in 2 categories, the first, composite panels. Kingspan's range of panels were selected, including the KS1000MR Microrib panel, & the KS1000FL flat panel. These were incorporated inc contrasting metallic grey colours to the higher areas of the elevations. The versatile KS1100QCK panel was used at lower levels to act as a carrier panel for render, Timber Cladding and Aluminium Rainscreen Cladding. The second cladding category is Rainscreen cladding. Two contrasting rainscreen specifications were selected, that of Aluminium cassette rainscreen, in the form of Kingspan's Dri Design Cassettes Rainscreen product, and the rather more traditional concealed fix vertical timber cladding, in the form of Luna Pure Thermowood.

Project Outcome

The completed cladding works have transformed the exterior of the High Performance Centre, delivering a modern and attractive facade that seamlessly integrates with Alexander Stadium's contemporary design. The vibrant blue 3.0mm Aluminium Dri-Design panels frame the main entrance, whilst the light-coloured Luna Pure Thermowood incorporating sioo:x & burnblock create an tactile feel upon approach, making the High Performance Centre a standout feature of the redeveloped Alexander Stadium.
